Scabbard
- 1850 US Union army staff and field officers sword with scabbard by Lantern Armouries.
The 1850 staff and field officers sword was adopted by the United States Army Ordnance Bureau on the 9th of April 1850. It was a piece of equipment that had to be purchased by the officer, so in 1860 a new lighter sword which was cheaper was introduced for volunteer and state officers. The 1860 sword was not a popular sword as it was too light and fragile where as the 1850 sword was a far better and sturdier design and by 1861 the 1850 army officers staff and field sword was the most popular sword carried in the American Civil War by Union officers and can be seen carried by officers after the war ended.
The union officers field and staff sword handle has a half-basket guard that bears the letters U.S. with a brass pommel while the handle is wrapped in genuine leather and a traditional wire wrap.
